Quick verdict

Best free-forever option

Zoho Invoice — 500 invoices/year, 2 users, no time limit (see below)

Best if you want zero invoice caps

Wave — unlimited invoicing, but pay 2.9% + $0.60 per card payment

Best if you also need bookkeeping

QuickBooks Solopreneur — bundles tax prep and mileage tracking, but the free tier caps at 2 invoices/month

We compared six invoicing tools on their actual free-plan limits and current pricing, verified against each vendor's official pricing page on September 26, 2026 — not on marketing copy. This is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on test of every tool; where a claim needs hands-on verification (setup friction, real invoice-sending experience), we've flagged that explicitly below rather than implying we tested it.

Zoho Invoice — best free-forever option

Best free-forever option — Zoho Invoice — 500 invoices/year, 2 users, no time limit (see below)

Zoho Invoice is genuinely free with no time limit and no forced upgrade. The free plan includes tax-compliant invoices, recurring billing, expense tracking, a client self-service portal, and online payment collection. The catch: you're capped at 2 team members, 3 active projects, and 500 invoices a year (roughly 41/month) — fine for a solo freelancer with a handful of clients, tight if you bill dozens of small invoices monthly. Every invoice also carries "Powered by Zoho Invoice" branding on the free tier.

Because Zoho Invoice itself has no paid tier, there's no commission we (or anyone) can earn from you staying on the free plan — Zoho's business model here is to upsell you into Zoho Books or Zoho One later, not to monetize Invoice directly.

Best for: freelancers who want free-forever invoicing and don't need more than ~40 invoices a month.

Wave — best if you want zero limits and don't mind payment fees

Wave

No true invoicing upgrade; Pro mainly reduces payment fees

Best if you want zero invoice caps — Wave — unlimited invoicing, but pay 2.9% + $0.60 per card payment

Wave's free Starter plan gives you unlimited invoices, estimates, and bookkeeping records, plus a mobile app. There's no invoice cap and no user-count restriction. The trade-off is on payments: accepting a card payment costs 2.9% + $0.60 (3.4% + $0.60 for Amex) on the free plan. Wave's paid Pro plan doesn't add more invoicing features — it mainly waives that per-transaction fee for your first 10 payments a month.

One honest caveat: Wave is a US/Canada-focused product, and we could not confirm official availability or full payment-processing support for Pakistan-based users from its public pricing page. If you're outside the US/Canada, verify signup and payout support directly with Wave before building a workflow around it.

Best for: freelancers who invoice a lot but only collect a few card payments a month, where the flat fee stays small in absolute terms.

Invoice Ninja — best free option if you want to own your data

Invoice Ninja

Starting paid price
$14/month (Pro, 1 user)
Free plan
Yes

Invoice Ninja's free cloud plan covers 5 clients with unlimited invoices — a real limit if you have a wide client base, but generous for freelancers who work with a small, recurring set of clients. Its bigger differentiator: Invoice Ninja is open-source, so you can self-host it entirely free with no client cap at all, if you're comfortable running your own server. The hosted Pro plan ($14/month) removes the client cap and adds a single-user upgrade path; Enterprise tiers scale up for teams.

Best for: freelancers who want either a truly free hosted plan for a handful of clients, or full control via self-hosting.

QuickBooks Solopreneur — best if you also need basic bookkeeping and tax prep

Best if you also need bookkeeping — QuickBooks Solopreneur — bundles tax prep and mileage tracking, but the free tier caps at 2 invoices/month

QuickBooks Solopreneur replaced QuickBooks Self-Employed for new signups and bundles invoicing with automated transaction categorization, mileage tracking, and profit-and-loss reporting aimed at one-person businesses. The free plan technically exists, but it caps you at 2 invoices a month — not workable if invoicing is your main use case. The Lite plan ($10/month introductory, $20/month regular) removes the invoice cap and is the realistic entry point if you want QuickBooks specifically for the tax/bookkeeping side.

Best for: freelancers who want invoicing bundled with tax prep and mileage tracking, and are fine paying from day one.

Bonsai — best if invoicing is part of a bigger freelance-ops workflow

Bonsai

Starting paid price
$19/month (Essentials — cheapest tier with invoicing)
Free plan
No

Bonsai doesn't have a permanent free plan — only a 7-day full-access trial. After that, invoicing specifically only unlocks on the Essentials tier ($19/month), which also includes proposals, contracts, and time tracking in one workflow. The cheaper Basic tier ($9/month) explicitly excludes invoicing, which is easy to miss when comparing prices.

Best for: freelancers who want invoicing bundled with proposals and contracts in one tool, and are willing to pay for that integration from the start.

FreshBooks — included for completeness, no affiliate relationship from us

FreshBooks

Free plan
No

FreshBooks is one of the most recognized names in freelancer invoicing, and it's worth evaluating on its own merits — check its official pricing page for current plans and limits. We're flagging upfront that we do not have an affiliate relationship with FreshBooks (its affiliate program is not open to publishers based in Pakistan), so nothing about how we describe it here is commission-motivated in either direction. If you're also considering QuickBooks Solopreneur, see our full FreshBooks vs QuickBooks Solopreneur comparison.

Free vs. paid invoicing: what you're actually giving up

The free plans above aren't crippled demos, but each one draws its limit in a different place:

  • Zoho Invoice limits volume (invoices/year, projects, users) — fine for low-volume solo freelancers.
  • Wave limits nothing on invoicing itself but takes a percentage of every payment — the cost scales with how much money moves through it, not how many invoices you send.
  • Invoice Ninja limits client count on the hosted free tier, removable entirely by self-hosting.
  • QuickBooks Solopreneur limits invoice count so tightly (2/month) that the free tier isn't really usable for active invoicing.
  • Bonsai doesn't offer a free tier at all past the trial — you're paying for workflow integration, not just invoicing.

If you're not sure how many invoices or clients you'll actually have in a typical month, count last month's real total before picking a plan — most freelancers overestimate this.

Which one should you use?

  • Solo freelancer, low invoice volume, want $0 forever: Zoho Invoice.
  • Higher invoice volume, few client payments a month: Wave.
  • Small, stable client list, want full data ownership: Invoice Ninja (self-hosted) or its free cloud tier.
  • Want invoicing + tax prep + mileage in one place: QuickBooks Solopreneur (budget for the Lite tier).
  • Want invoicing bundled with proposals/contracts: Bonsai.
  • Already loyal to an established brand and don't need free: FreshBooks (evaluate independently — see note above).

Invoicing is only one piece of running a small business. If you're also evaluating how to track leads and deals, see our best CRM software for small businesses comparison — or start with what a CRM actually does if you're not sure you need one yet.
